Education and Outreach

As part of the SPC's education and outreach, it holds several in-person and online meetings and educational events a year. The SPC believes it will require collaboration throughout the supply chain to affect the change needed to realize sustainable packaging. As a result, the SPC continually looks for opportunities to advance its mission through participation in and hosting of conferences and meetings.

SPC July Open Forum - Material IQ - an information resource for material transparency

Thursday, July 26, 2012
11:00 am - 12:00 pm EST

This webinar will provide an overview of this material information sharing platform that GreenBlue plans to launch in 2013. Its purpose is to create a business-to-business marketplace for "raw" material suppliers to share information across multiple industry sectors. An overview of the purpose and function of Material IQ will be presented followed by a Q&A session.

Presenters
James Ewell, Director, GreenBlue Chemicals

As a member of the original team that founded GreenBlue, James re-joined the organization as Director of the GreenBlue Chemicals program in September 2011. During his initial time at GreenBlue, James helped establish the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and also co-created the Sustainable Textile Metrics that evolved into the NSF/ANSI 336 Standard for the Assessment of Sustainable Commercial Furnishing Fabrics. In his current role, James oversees the expansion of the GreenBlue Chemicals program by spearheading the development of tools and resources that compliment and leverage the CleanGredients platform and that are necessary for industry to identity and promote safer chemicals in the design and manufacturing of products.

In the intervening years between his time at GreenBlue, James was Director of Consulting and Senior Project Manager at McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, where he developed and implemented criteria for designing and manufacturing sustainable products and improving corporate practices. There he worked with major corporate clients including Ford Motor Co., P&G, Seventh Generation, Shaw Industries, Victor Group, Energizer, and Replenish, among many other companies from a diversity of industrial sectors. James has also held positions at organizations such as the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the International Center for Development Policy. In addition, James has a long history of advocacy work in social justice and international development issues. James holds an MA in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia, as well as a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his time away from the office, James enjoys organic vegetable gardening, scuba diving, as well as learning other primitive “earth skills.”
