Industry Leadership Committee on Inks, Coatings, and Adhesives
Launched: August 2012
Team leaders:
- Frank Clementi, Director/End User Sustainability, Cork Industries
- Matt Lopes, Business Manager, Novacote Division, COIM USA, Inc.
- Jim McWilliams, Technical Sales Representative, Cork Industries
Scope:How familiar are you with the inks, coatings, and adhesives used on your packaging? While so much of the focus on improving the sustainability of packaging is directed to the primary packaging materials, a disproportionately small focus is given to the ancillary treatments. Yet, it is often found that treatments like inks, coatings, and adhesives can play a major role in enhancing or disrupting the sustainability attributes of packaging. This group seeks to broaden the conversation to include these important components.
Objectives:
- Identify the sustainability considerations introduced by the inks, coatings, and adhesives, commonly used in packaging.
- Identify the comparative impact of inks, coatings, and adhesives on the total environmental impact of the package or packaged product.
- Identify how inks, coatings, and adhesives can impact recycling of packaging materials.
Phase 1:The committee has agreed to take a multi-phased approach to our work plan. Phase 1 will be a high level overview of Inks, Coatings, and Adhesives commonly used in SBS, Rigid PET containers, and OPP flexible packaging. The overview will be completed in matrix form and include information on common terms, acronyms, and definitions; environmental and end of life considerations; and economic and performance pros and cons for various formulations. Phase 1 work started in January 2013, and is expected to conclude prior to the SPC Fall Meeting October 7 and 8 in St. Petersburg, FL.
Phase 2:Phase 2 is intended to take a closer look at human and environmental health considerations. This phase is loosely scoped at this point, and you are encouraged to participate and help shape it.
